Queensland Theatre Company - Sweeney Todd

Queensland Theatre Company and Opera Queensland present
A MUSICAL THRILLER
SWEENEY TODD
THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Hugh Wheeler
Directed by Daniel Evans

Revenge is a dish best served one customer at a time.

Widely regarded as Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's masterwork  — Sweeney Todd is a bitingly brilliant black comedy: bloody, gothic and wickedly funny with a soaring score that's as thrilling as its brutal body count!

Wrongfully convicted and exiled by a corrupt judge, Sweeney Todd returns to the grim streets of Victorian London with one thing on his mind: revenge. But payback can be hungry work, and Sweeney finds an unlikely - and equally cutthroat - business partner in Mrs Lovett, whose bakery beneath his barbershop is about to become very popular with customers and suppliers alike ...

Since its 1979 debut Sondheim’s ripper musical has collected eight Tony Awards, nine Drama Desk Awards, an Olivier, and multiple award-winning Broadway and West End revivals. Nearly fifty years on, audiences, like Sweeney, still have a taste for piping hot pies and their just desserts.

Rockhampton-lad-turned-musical-theatre star Andy Conaghan makes his QTC Mainstage Debut as Sweeney Todd alongside beloved leading lady Naomi Price (Calamity Jane) as Mrs Lovett.

Featuring musical supervision by the incomparable Guy Simpson (Phantom Of The Opera) and a stacked cast of ten theatrical beasts, this home-grown production of Sondheim’s gloriously gruesome musical thriller puts you within razor's range of Fleet Street’s most infamous barber, where the shaves come close and the action closer!
