A Sydney Theatre Company production
By Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare
Adapted from Homer’s Iliad
Translated by Robert Fagles
What if one of the oldest stories ever told spoke directly to us now?
Award-winning international star David Wenham brings Homer’s 3000 year old myth of the Trojan War thrillingly to life in this electrifying collision of epic storytelling and live music.
The Greeks and the Trojans have been slaughtering each other for ten long years. At the centre is Achilles – the greatest warrior of his age, consumed by rage and locked in a struggle between pride, vengeance and the possibility of hope. Around him, an entire civilisation is collapsing – caught in an obsession with war.
Homer’s story is transformed by writers Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare into an acclaimed and dynamic adaptation that is immediate, visceral and gloriously theatrical. Led by Damien Ryan – one of Australia’s most innovative directors – you don’t need to know your Achilles from your Agamemnon to be transported into a world that shifts effortlessly between the ancient and the disturbingly familiar.
With a musician as his only companion, witness David Wenham conjure gods and heroes, battlefields and betrayals; bringing them all startlingly close to home in a virtuosic performance.
Fresh from the sold-out season of Sydney Theatre Company’s An Iliad, David once again delivers a plea for hope and empathy that has been hailed as “shocking, glorious, primal and deeply satisfying” (Time Out New York).
Some stories are classics. Some are intensely alive. This is An Iliad.
