Australian Youth Orchestra
Did you know music contains triangles, rectangles and curves? Maths is everywhere in music: in its structure and patterns – and, if you know where to look, music is in maths.
Stravinsky, composer of The Rite of Spring and The Firebird, said “The musician should find in mathematics a study as useful to (them) as the learning of another language is to a poet. Mathematics swims seductively just below the surface”.
Internationally acclaimed saxophone virtuoso Jonathan Radford and Prof. Yang-Hui He, a Fellow at the London Institute specialising in AI-guided mathematics, take students on an immersive journey through sound and space, communicating complex mathematics to non-specialist audiences in an interactive performance featuring the Australian premiere of award-winning composer, Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s Three Mathematical Diversions.
Featuring the talented young musicians of the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Momentum Ensemble, students will develop an appreciation of equations which, like great art or music, can be considered beautiful and can help us in finding the ‘Theory of Everything’.
Australian Youth Orchestra: Beautiful Equations is part of World Science Festival Brisbane. Find out more here.
