A group of friends. A housing shortage. Sound’s familiar? Welcome to the world of Brisbane, Cheryomushki.
Originally performed as Moscow Cheryomushki, Dmitri Shostakovich’s delightful operetta—named after an actual Moscow suburb—offers a witty and affectionate satire on the housing challenges of post–World War II Russia.
Shostakovich pairs this social commentary with sparkling musical pastiche, drawing on the traditions of operetta through waltzes, polkas, choral numbers, and Russian folk song. Conducted by esteemed Australian composer Richard Mills AO and featuring a new translation of the original Russian libretto by Queensland Conservatorium favourite Constantine Costi (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria [2025], and the award‑winning documentary The Golden Spurtle), this is a rare musical gem not to be missed.
