And just like that, they’re back! After a stellar sold out run earlier this year of three Sydney Opera Houses and five Hamer Halls in Melbourne, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings make an exciting return to Australia for the second leg of their Woodland campaign. This time hittin’ the road from Queensland and making their way down the East Coast, with a slight detour to Adelaide, then finishing in regional Victoria.
Brisbane prepare yourself for the magic of this dynamic duo.
For more than 25 years, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have stood as two of the most vital voices in American roots music. Since their early days in Nashville, the pair have crafted a sound defined by exquisite harmonies, aching simplicity and an unspoken musical connection that borders on the telepathic.
Welch’s breakthrough came when Emmylou Harris recorded her song “Orphan Girl”, leading to her acclaimed debut Revival and its follow-up Hell Among the Yearlings. Together, Welch and Rawlings helped define a generation of Americana through their Grammy-winning work on O Brother, Where Art Thou? and albums like Time (The Revelator) and The Harrow & The Harvest.
Their latest album, Woodland (2025, Acony Records) continues that legacy – a quiet, radiant testament to preservation and the timeless power of song. As Rolling Stone noted, “Where much of the Americana genre bemoans what’s gone, Woodland plays like a humble offering on the altar of what remains”.
And Pitchfork praised its “quiet adventures and clear empathy”, showcasing once again the intuitive bond that makes their music so singular.
