Step into the world of orchestral innovation and witness the power of music to transcend boundaries at this exclusive event, part of the Alliance Française French Film Festival. Prepare to be captivated by the true story of Zahia Ziouani, a trailblazing conductor who defied expectations to bring classical music to new audiences. This special screening of the French documentary Zahia, un temps d’avance (Zahia, a Step Ahead) is not just a film–it’s a testament to passion, culture, and change.

Brought to you by the Alliance Française de Brisbane, your evening will begin with the screening of the French documentary Zahia, un temps d’avance (Zahia, a Step Ahead), which provides an intimate look into the Divertimento Orchestra’s intensive preparation for a landmark concert at the Philharmonie de Paris in 2022. This film captures the essence of Zahia Ziouani’s journey from a young music enthusiast to a passionate conductor and advocate for making classical music accessible to diverse audiences.

As the documentary reveals Zahia’s exceptional path and her efforts to democratise classical music, we are also introduced to her twin sister, Fettouma Ziouani, the orchestra’s first cello. Their shared story is one of determination, cultural identity, and the transformative power of music.

Following the documentary, you will be invited to stay for a short performance from Cellist Fettouma Ziouani, and a panel discussion on Breaking Musical Barriers. This engaging dialogue will feature Zahia Ziouani herself, Cellist Fettouma Ziouani, alongside esteemed panellists such as Yarmilla Alfonzetti, CEO of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Brendan Joyce, Artistic Director of Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra and Ray Lin Composer, Conductor and Arranger.

For those seeking an even more immersive experience, a select number of VIP tickets are available. VIP guests will have the privilege of attending a post-event meet-and-greet function with the panellists, including Zahia and Fettouma Ziouani. This exclusive gathering offers a rare chance to engage in personal dialogue with these inspiring figures, providing deeper insight into their experiences and the themes explored throughout the evening.
