Experience the colourful and soulful folk music from the Nordic lands of Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark in this intimate recital with Camerata violinist Sally-Ann Djachenko and pianist, Brett Sturdy.

This eclectic mix of sublime music spans 100 years from Edvard Grieg to Jórunn Viðar.

Viðar, Rosenberg, Grieg, Rautavaara and Christiansen were all strongly influenced by the folk music of their era while developing their own unique styles. The mellow drone of Vidar’s Icelandic fiddle is contrasted with Rautavaara’s rapturous and frenetic hymn to wine and fertility, Dithyrambos.

Grieg’s strong nationalistic affinity with Norwegian folk music is seen in the outpouring of heartrending melody in his most famous 3rd violin sonata, which was one of his own favourite compositions.

Christiansen’s quirky writing, a direct homage to Eric Satie, provides some light relief and humour to the more serious 2nd violin sonata of Rosenberg, composed just after the outbreak of World War 2. This work moves away from the late romantic period to something more esoteric with some beautiful nostalgic soaring melodies while also using some exciting driving rhythmic motifs.

Presented by Camerata, this intimate recital with Camerata Artistic Associate Sally-Ann Djachenko and guest pianist Brett Sturdy is the perfect opportunity to experience music performed up close and personal.
