Bruce Pascoe (Dark Emu) delivers this year’s Narelle Oliver Lecture acknowledging the International Year of Indigenous Languages and encouraging us to teach children the truth about Australia’s history.

Pascoe is a long-time student and teacher of Wathaurong language and has worked extensively on the resurrection of the Yuin language understanding that culture is embedded in language.

Bruce Pascoe is a Yuin, Bunurong and Tasmanian man born in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond. He is a member of the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative of southern Victoria and has been the director of the Australian Studies Project for the Commonwealth Schools Commission. Pascoe has had a varied career as a teacher, farmer, fisherman, barman, fencing contractor, lecturer, Aboriginal language researcher, archaeological site worker and editor. Pascoe has published more than 20 adult and children’s titles, including Ocean, Convincing Ground: Learning to Fall in Love with Your Country; Fog a Dox; and Dark Emu: Black Seeds: Agriculture Or Accident?.  Pascoe won the 2016 Book of the Year NSW Premier’s Literary Awards for Dark Emu and was co-winner of the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards Indigenous Writer’s Prize. Dark Emu was also shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards and the Victorian Premier’s Award for Indigenous Writing. Fog a Dox won the 2013 Prime Ministers Literary Award for YA Fiction.

The Library Shop will have a range of Bruce’s books available for purchase at the event, and you are invited to meet him following the lecture to have your book signed.

The Narelle Oliver Lecture is an initiative of Book Links Queensland raising the profile of Children’s Literature.
