Griffith Review presents
Salil Tripathi and Peter Greste in conversation with Geraldine Doogue
Hosted by Julianne Schultz

When journalist Peter Greste and his al-Jazeera colleagues were jailed in Egypt for doing their job, PEN International condemned the decision and agitated for their release. Salil Tripathi, Chair of PEN International Writers in Prison Committee, which advocates for writers' human rights, visits Australia as a guest of Griffith Review and joins Peter Greste in conversation with Geraldine Doogue for one night only. Peter Greste and his colleagues were imprisoned for four hundred days, and last year a record number of 262 journalists were jailed, most for alleged anti-government activities. Journalists are one of the first targets of authoritarian populists. In an era of 'fake news' and populism, freedom of expression and freedom of the press are under attack. This discussion will explore what this means, what is at stake and what can be done. Hosted by Griffith Review's Founding Editor, Julianne Schultz. Avid Reader will be selling books before and after the event.
