Bohuslav Martinu Revue de CuisineBela Bartok Sonata for 2 pianos and percussionMaurice Ravel Piano TrioWilliam Walton Facade Suite
QCGU Alumni Philip Mayers joins Ensemble in the joint role of pianist and narrator in this blockbuster program of 20th century masterworks. Starting with Martinu’s outrageous music for a ballet set in a kitchen where twirling sticks, a pot, a lid and a dishcloth are the main characters, this intensely quirky concert-suite features the greatest “Charleston’ ever conceived for the chamber music stage! Bartok’s mesmerising and exhilarating sonata for 2 pianos and percussion and the timelessly sublime piano trio by Ravel will take you to extraordinary places before setting you down in the fantasy world of Walton’s Facade for speaker and instrumental ensemble. Using the poetry of Edith Sitwell, Walton crafted this ‘entertainment’ with such grace and humour that it will leave you laughing, smirking, a little teary or just tapping your toe to the ubiquitous fox trot! We are delighted to welcome back outstanding Kristian Winther as our guest violinist for this program.
