The brilliant Jason Barry Smith joins Ensemble Q for a performance of Heinz Karl Gruber's immense and genre busting work from the 1970s, Frankenstein. With its foundations in cabaret, the mood switches almost simultaneously from melancholia, scary movie soundtrack to hilarious passages of musical pastiche and cynicism. With all players expected to double on all manor of toy instruments including toy pianos, plastic wind instruments, slide whistles and whirlies, Frankenstein is an extravaganza of theatrical entertainment. Changing the pace somewhat, will be the second half dedicated to Brahms most famous and popular chamber work, his first piano quartet in g minor. The beauty of the first three movements is always complements and sometimes delightfully overshadowed by the brilliance of the final Hungarian Rondo that will bring the Ensemble Q 2018 season to a joyous and breathtaking conclusion.
