Pianist Stephen Emmerson is known and cherished by audiences all around the country, regularly performing and recording with some of Australia’s finest orchestras and chamber ensembles. An adjunct professor at Queensland Conservatorium, his passionate championing of lesser-known chamber music works means there are always surprises in store for his audience.
For this concert, Emmerson partners the fast-rising soprano Sofia Troncoso, a 2021 Opera Queensland Young Artist who has been making a name for herself both in Australia and abroad. Like Emmerson, Troncoso is an exceptionally versatile artist, equally at home in early and contemporary music. Recent highlights include a “charming and witty” Papagena in Magic Flute for Scottish Opera and a celebrated debut with Longborough Festival Opera in the title role of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione de Poppea.
Emmerson and Troncoso are joined by flautist Patrick Nolan, another Brisbane musician whose contributions to the city’s musical life have been vast. Previously the principal flute of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, he was a founding member of The Lunaire Collective and Aesther Ensemble.
Together, they will perform a program of arias and songs by Bellini, Saint-Säens, Hahn, Ravel, Delibes, and Debussy, as well as works for piano by Chopin and Szymanowski.
