BEETHOVEN BIRTHDAY CONCERT Piano Sonata No 8 in C minor, Op 13 ‘Pathétique’ Sonata for Violin and Piano No 5 in F, Op 24 ‘Spring’ Andante favori in F major, WoO57 Sonata for Violin and Piano No 9 in A, Op 47 ‘Kreutzer’
The honeyed tones of Warwick Adeney’s 18th century Venetian violin will blend in a glorious musical partnership with Stephen Emmerson on a Steinway piano as they play the magnificent Beethoven ‘Spring’ and ‘Kreutzer’ violin sonatas. The ‘Spring Sonata’ is one of Beethoven’s most popular works, a beautifully lyrical and joyful expression of Spring. The ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata is grand, rich in texture with extremely challenging technical demands with a brilliant finale of continuous rapid rhythm in the style of the Italian tarantella dance. The solo piano works include the lovely Andante favori and Beethoven’s exquisite ‘Pathétique’ Sonata, the slow movement of which contains one of the most beautiful melodies ever written.
Warwick Adeney is the concertmaster of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and is one of Australia’s most revered musicians. Stephen Emmerson performs regularly with orchestras and chamber ensembles as well as playing solo recitals. He is a senior lecturer in Music at the Queensland Conservatorium.
