The series commences with John Rotar’s new work, inspired by an Aztec legend about a feathered serpent called Quetzalcoatl. Outstanding young bassoonist Jamie Dodd performs Hummel’s virtuosic Bassoon Concerto before the folklore theme is re-visited after interval, commencing with a suite from Prokofiev’s Cinderella ballet music. Then Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra, considered the crowning achievement of the composer’s folklorist style.
