Romance & Revolution Hailed as “world class” and "the most exciting young string quartet on the block", the Orava Quartet - Camerata's Quartet-in-Residence proudly present their long-awaited debut album for Universal Music, in a program of powerful and moving works. Haydn's 'Russian' quartets were dedicated to Grand Duke Paul of Russia, and Rachmaninoff's first, unfinished, string quartet, composed as a youth of 17, provides glimpses of the heart-rending Romantic melodies that would make his music so widely known and loved. In contrast, Shostakovich’s emotionally wrenching string quartet no.8, composed after a visit to the bombed city of Dresden, was officially dedicated to the victims of fascism and war, and remains a timely reminder of the tragedy and human cost of conflict. Finally, Orava performs Tchaikovsky's glorious String Quartet No. 1, an immediate success in Russia and abroad, and one of the most popular works in chamber music. Featuring the famous Andante Cantabile which is said to have moved Leo Tolstoy to tears, the Orava Quartet brings this classic work to life with their signature passion and intensity. “Beautifully calculated and coordinated … time and motion seemed to defy the laws of physics”The Washington Post ProgramHaydn String Quartet, Op.33 No.2 (The Joke)Rachmaninov String Quartet No.1Shostakovich String Quartet No.8 in C Minor, Op.110Tchaikovsky String Quartet No.1 in D Major, Op.11
