The miraculous profundity of the slow movement in Op 18 No 3 is a harbinger of his later genius in this form.  In contrast, Johannes Brahms heeded the immortal words of Dylan Thomas not “to go gentle into that good night....” with his Op 111 String Quintet. It will be a timeless cultural collection that will surprise and engage audiences through traditional and contemporary First Nation dance and storytelling as each choreographer has their own unique style and traditional voice. Rita Pryce (BAIWA DANCE CO), Jacob Boehme (IDJA DANCE THEATRE) and Tammi Gissell (FIGURES OF SPEECH) represent the Australian independent choreographers whilst the international choreographers include Ojeya Cruz Banks of Guåhan/Guam and African American heritage and Jack Gray and Cathy Livermore (ATAMIRA DANCE COLLECTIVE) from New Zealand. BLAKDANCE 2012 is a showcase where international, national and local choreographers, dancers, industry members and audiences can come together to celebrate and gain a deeper understanding of First Nation Australia through contemporary dance practice. Starting with the famous (impossible to play) clarinet glissando, it is a fun, brilliant and virtuosic feat for all. In this program we will feature two other Rhapsodies: Debussy's Premier Rhapsody for clarinet featuring Southern Cross Soloists member Paul Dean, and Dean's own composition, Rhapsody for Southern Cross Soloists - a world premiere. Paul has insisted on the inclusion of the contraforte (a groundbreaking re-invention of the sometime awkward contrabassoon) in his piece, so we welcome contreforte expert Brock Imison of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. We will be joined by Principal Trumpet of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Sarah Wilson, in the Gershwin and in a delightful trio sonata by Vivaldi.
