This exhibition celebrates the changing roles of women during the Belle Époque as depicted by leading artists of the time, such as Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Édouard Vuillard, Édouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, Pierre Bonnard, Auguste Rodin, Berthe Morisot and Jean François Millet. These artists increasingly abandoned idealised representations of the female figure; instead, they turned to women from a diverse range of backgrounds, depicting the women in their family lives and domestic activities, as well as in the public realm as spectators, performers and workers. Through these fascinating drawings, we see French society undergoing radical transformation.Modern Woman Special High Tea OfferComplement your visit to the exhibition with an indulgent high tea at the GOMA Restaurant. Enjoy a sparkling glass of wine, delicious finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and delightful petite sweets followed by your choice of tea or coffee.Sittings at 10.30am and 2.30pm$44 per person (includes exhibition entry)Bookings: (07) 3842 9916. Walk-in visitors also welcome (subject to availability).Edgar Degas / Seated dancer leaning forward, massaging her left foot c.1881–83 (detail) / Caillebotte bequest, 1894 / Collection: Musée d’Orsay, Paris / Photograph: © RMN (Musée d’Orsay) / Hervé Lewandowski

Picnic Basket for Two

ULTIMATE PICNIC FEAST FOR TWOPicnic baskets at QPAC are a perfect option for those who want a quick, easy and delicious pre-show meal. Each "nobody" recounts an intimate tale of how her life was transformed by an encounter with one of the icons. With phenomenal control of tone and accent, Robinson seamlessly brings to life each "nobody" and each legendary singer. Her voice shifts from the smoky blues of Billie Holiday to the thrilling soprano of Maria Callas, via Garland, Cline and Piaf, with consummate ease."MIRACULOUS VOICE" The Age "VIRTUOSIC ACTING" The Australian"THEATRICAL ALCHEMY" Herald Sun "A SPELLBINDER" Barry Humphries"ONE OF THE MUSICAL HIGHLIGHTS OF 2011" Courier Mail, Brisbane "LEAVES ONE EXULTANT AND SHOULD NOT BE MISSED" Sydney Morning Herald Proudly presented by DeBortoli Wines

Choreographer François Klaus offers a different take on the legendary story by Cervantes in this inventive production.
The ballet, Don Quixote, is being filmed, and the dancer performing the title role feels such an affinity for his character that he plunges himself into reading the original tale. In his dreams, he becomes the famous knight and is transported into the wonderful world of the Don's illusions, where he performs chivalrous deeds, seeks glory in battle, and gives his heart to the beautiful Dulcinea. But the Don's grand exploits are all in his head, and he is blissfully unaware of how much amusement this creates.
Back on the film set, there is a sparkling performance of highlights from the traditional ballet. With stirring music and spirited dance, this Don Quixote is a gentle reminder of the great power of imagination. Her Royal Redness must stave off pesky coups and conspiracies and to make matters even worse, hunky heartbreaker Robert Essex is due any minute and Her Majesty is in no condition to receive guests. But that’s nothing a bit of leech-o-suction and a bee sting booblift won’t fix… Drawing on all the energy, spirit and spontaneity of original 16th century commedia dell’arte, Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo offers up a modern stage masterpiece which transcends language and culture. Elizabeth: Almost by Chance a Woman is in equal parts a bawdy burlesque, a riotous nose-thumbing of authority, and a surprisingly touching insight into the challenges of womanhood. This show contains strong coarse language.

Brisbane Symphony Orchestra and Brisbane Chorale - Seascapes

This concert is an event of the 4MBS Festival of Classics. The Brisbane Chorale and the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra join forces to present Seascapes featuring a performance of Vaughan Williams' epic A Sea Symphony and works by Debussy.

Kawai Piano Series: A Piano Spectacular

Australian pianist Lisa Moore, described as “New York’s queen of avant-garde piano” (The New Yorker) joins local musicians in a dynamic program of 20th and 21st century music. Guest Artist: Brett Dean, viola
Beethoven’s Op 18 quartets were his debut for this combination and, although composed under the lingering shadow Haydn & Mozart, quickly established his credentials as a major musical force. The miraculous profundity of the slow movement in Op 18 No 3 is a harbinger of his later genius in this form. In contrast, Johannes Brahms heeded the immortal words of Dylan Thomas not “to go gentle into that good night....” with his Op 111 String Quintet. Despite being composed well in to the composer’s middle age, its energy and dynamism make it seem like a product of a glorious Indian summer. Contemporary Australian composer Brett Dean used the same instrumental combination as Brahms in a very twenty-first century take in his Epitaphs for Viola & String Quartet to create engrossing musical portraits in memory of departed friends.

Blakdance 2012 - Greenhouse Project

BLAKDANCE 2012 is an international showcase celebrating First Nation contemporary dance. For the first time six renowned international and Australian First Nation choreographers will work with established and emerging dancers to create a new production called BLAKDANCE 2012. This production will include a suite of works devised by each choreographer. It will be a timeless cultural collection that will surprise and engage audiences through traditional and contemporary First Nation dance and storytelling as each choreographer has their own unique style and traditional voice. Rita Pryce (BAIWA DANCE CO), Jacob Boehme (IDJA DANCE THEATRE) and Tammi Gissell (FIGURES OF SPEECH) represent the Australian independent choreographers whilst the international choreographers include Ojeya Cruz Banks of Guåhan/Guam and African American heritage and Jack Gray and Cathy Livermore (ATAMIRA DANCE COLLECTIVE) from New Zealand. BLAKDANCE 2012 is a showcase where international, national and local choreographers, dancers, industry members and audiences can come together to celebrate and gain a deeper understanding of First Nation Australia through contemporary dance practice. It’s an opportunity to share; where traditional dance meets contemporary performance, where the storytelling is from global cultural voices. Throughout the week there will also be forums, a cultural artists’ symposium and master classes. This showcase event is created by BlakDance Australia Limited. BlakDance Australia Limited was born from an Ausdance National program called Treading the Pathways. Like Treading the Pathways, BlakDance Australia Limited’s purpose is to support Indigenous Australian dance and dancers. The festival is a week of cultural activity crafted to celebrate and support children’s learning and foster a love of the performing arts through curiosity, discovery and serious play. It is a time when children take over and reinvent the cultural icons of our city as one great big playground full of fantastic workshops, artworks and activities that celebrate our connection with each other and our world.
2012 marks the 20th birthday of Out of the Box as well as the National Year of Reading, an Australia-wide Federal Government initiative. Out of the Box is pleased to support this by making the key theme of the 2012 festival Literacy.
Out of the Box is proud to collaborate with its many partners to present a showcase of experiences that are meaningful, lively, creative, and artistically rewarding. We join our partners and audiences on a discovery through the magic of books and story, narrative, performance and thoughtful play. Extending throughout the Cultural Centre precinct, Out of the Box is a week of cultural activity crafted to celebrate and support learning, play, curiosity and discovery for children and their families as they learn and grow together.

The Orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor, Eivind Aadland, returns to conduct Mahler's Ninth Symphony, the crowning glory of the great Austro- Germanic symphonic tradition which began with Haydn and Mozart. The Ninth is a work of genius, with passages of anguished beauty juxtaposed with mock-gaiety and sardonic wit. The final adagio is one of Mahler's most profound and moving statements, full of majestic resignation and far from earthly tribulations.

Cradle to Rave is Henry's most personal show yet, offering a hilarious and touching insight into a man to whom music matters a little too much. From growing up thinking Elvis was a relative as there were so many pictures of him in the house, to missing a cue during his theatrical debut as Othello because he was listening to hip hop, Cradle to Rave sets Henry's family, first loves and fame against a musical backdrop -- a comic cabaret voyage through his life told via its eclectic soundtrack. The Last Five Years is a contemporary song cycle that ingeniously chronicles the five year life of a marriage, from meeting to break up...or from break up to meeting, depending on how you look at it. Cathy and Jamie's relationship has lasted five years. As the story begins Cathy is at the beginning of the relationship and Jamie is at the end. With inter-cutting scenes, we watch Jamie move forward in time as Cathy moves backwards. The Last Five Years is an intensely personal look at the relationship between a writer and an actress told from both points of view. Winner of the 2002 Drama Desk award for outstanding music and lyrics, The Last Five Years is an unforgettable musical experience.

Hairspray

Book by Mark O'Donnell & Thomas MeehanLyrics by Scott Wittman & Marc ShaimanMusic by Marc ShaimanIt's 1962, and pleasantly plump Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire - to be on television dancing on the popular Corny Collins Show. Whatever it is, it certainly makes the world, and music, go round. Love and romance have been the most powerful source of inspiration to composers of all ages: the euphoric love of Romeo and Juliet... even Beethoven (forever unlucky in love) who entrusted his love song to a solo violin. Eivind Aadland, Kang Wang and Milica Ilic, QSO, spiced with a few typically wry comments from the permanently lovestruck Guy Noble, explore some of music's pinnacles of passion.

A year before the action of the opera unfolds, Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado (the Emperor of Japan), fled his father's imperial court to escape certain marriage with Katisha, an elderly woman and resident court cougar.
Disguised as a travelling musician, Nanki-Poo meets and falls in love with Yum-Yum, the young ward of Ko-Ko, a low-cost tailor in the town of Titipu, to whom she is betrothed. All seems lost for the travelling troubadour, that is, until he hears that Ko-Ko has been condemned to death for the crime of flirting.
Spurred on by hope, our hero returns to Titipu to reclaim the heart of his beloved Yum-Yum. But, as in most British comedy, things take a turn toward the absurd and the saucy.
Gilbert and Sullivan’s spicy dip into the world of subterfuge and political satire has been thrilling audiences for generations, but seems even more poignant today. In an incurably bizarre world, this colourful production of The Mikado proves that laughter is still the best medicine.

Since then endless artists, writers and musicians have been inspired by this musical legend.Signed by Columbia Records in 1962 by legendary producer/A&R man John Hammond (Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Aretha Franklin, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen), Bob Dylan seemed so 'left of field' that he was initially derided as "Hammond's folly".Now, to celebrate his 50th anniversary as a recording artist, five of Australia's distinctive 21st Century performers will join forces to honour this remarkable legacy with their own unique voices: Kav Temperley led Eskimo Joe to an historic blitz of the ARIA Awards and a spectacular double win at the APRAs, the bookends of phenomenal national impact as a rock writer/ performer leading a band which notched up over three quarter of a million sales and three number one albums. Josh Pyke is a modern-day storyteller whose unique and evocative music has garnered two ARIA Awards, three Top 5 albums, and eight songs in Triple J's Hottest 100. ARIA award winning Jebediah frontman Kevin Mitchell racked up hundreds of thousands of sales and ten years touring the world, before his acoustic alter ego Bob Evans went ballistic with nominations for ARIA's Best Male Artist and the prestigious Australian Music Prize and a number of Gold albums. Holly Throsby has gained huge respect as an independent singer-songwriter of rare skill and insight over five albums of her own as well as comprising one third of gold-selling supergroup Seeker Lover Keeper. Patience Hodgson has been the vocal powerhouse of indie rock duo the Grates since 2002, clocking up three top 10 albums, a slew of bright, brash alternative radio hits and a reputation as one of the most ecstatic new performers on the Australian stage. With a stellar rock ensemble under the musical direction of guitarist ASH NAYLOR the inaugural BOB DYLAN NIGHT will showcase some of the greatest works from the maestro's sprawling songbook for an evening of inspiration and creation with the highest musical integrity. To vote for the songs you'd like to hear performed on the night click here www.bobdylannight.com

Melissa Etheridge

JUST ANNOUNCED! Aged 22, Schubert had his first holiday in the country. In the Trout, he captures the mood of those carefree summer days and his ecstatic delight in the countryside, in warm, beguiling melodies and harmonies.
A prisoner of war, Messiaen wrote the Quartet for the End of Time for the musicians he found in the camp, premiering it to an audience of inmates and guards. "Never" he said, "was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension." Critic Alex Ross calls it "the most ethereally beautiful music of the 20th century...as overpowering now as it was on that frigid night in 1941."

Piers Lane, who regularly inspires the critics, performs this concerto, a spectacularly successful marriage of jazz-inspired idiom and classical form. However much Dvoràk may have been captivated by the big sky and wide open prairies of the US when he wrote his New World Symphony, the lilt and freshness of this most beloved symphony tell us that his heart and soul remained in his native Bohemia.

Starting with the famous (impossible to play) clarinet glissando, it is a fun, brilliant and virtuosic feat for all.
In this program we will feature two other Rhapsodies: Debussy's Premier Rhapsody for clarinet featuring Southern Cross Soloists member Paul Dean, and Dean's own composition, Rhapsody for Southern Cross Soloists - a world premiere. Paul has insisted on the inclusion of the contraforte (a groundbreaking re-invention of the sometime awkward contrabassoon) in his piece, so we welcome contreforte expert Brock Imison of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
We will be joined by Principal Trumpet of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Sarah Wilson, in the Gershwin and in a delightful trio sonata by Vivaldi. Soprano Margaret Schindler will also fascinate with the intriguing songs of Aaron Copland based on the haunting poetry of Emily Dickinson.

Tolkien's literary imagination to vivid life with his Academy®- and Grammy® Award-winning score to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Shore's music expresses Peter Jackson's film as an immense symphonic work--a uniquely developed vision drawn from centuries of stylistic tendencies. The music of The Lord of the Rings is counted among film music's most complex and comprehensive works. This unique performance sets the score to the film, but allows the music to bear the narrative weight, creating a wholly new and dramatic live concert experience. Shore's score not only captures Fellowship's sweeping emotion, thrilling vistas and grand journeys, but also echoes the very construction of Tolkien's Middle-earth. Styles, instruments and performers collected from around the world provide each of Tolkien's cultures with a unique musical imprint. Relentless touring has garnered Emmanuel hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. His unique style is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a band for melody, rhythm, bass and drum parts, Tommy plays all that - and more - on one guitar. Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire young Emmanuel to try this "fingerpicker" style. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel's biggest fans. Guitar players of all levels come to his shows to witness the magic hands of the 'Guitar Wizard of Oz,' but his appeal goes far beyond musicians. Tommy Emmanuel's message is pure love for the guitar and the music and his delight in sharing it with the world, one audience at a time.

Sunken Dreams

The Song Company with guest artist Claire Edwardes (vibraphone/water percussion)

Big Brother is back.
Oceania; a Nation perpetually at war, where cameras watch every move and Thought Police roam the streets. A place Winston Smith calls home. By day, Winston is an editor at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history to align the past with the radical political agenda of the ruling party and its illusive leader, Big Brother.
By night, Winston pursues a forbidden love affair with the mysterious Julia in an attempt to rebel against the oppressive regime set down by the party and maintain some control over his otherwise totally controlled life.
When Winston and Julia are discovered, they are violently separated, detained and prepared for conversion. Locked in the Ministry of Love and interrogated by the quietly terrifying O'Brien, Winston is beaten, manipulated and subjected to sickening torture in an attempt to make him reject dreams of liberation and understand that free thought and logic is the only true enemy.
From the team that brought you the sold out season of Animal Farm, this new stage adaptation brings George Orwell's final novel screaming into the present. Strap yourself in for this terrifically frightening theatrical event featuring a cast of some of Queensland's most acclaimed artists, set against a dynamic digital backdrop. This production is sure to stun as it contemplates the ultimate crime against humanity - the total destruction of truth, freedom and individuality in favor of surveillance, obedience and conformity.

Wagner spent twenty-six years on the composition of the Ring, which comprises four separate operas designed to be performed in sequence. Although Das Rheingold is the first opera in the series, its libretto was the last to be written.
Conducting the Hamburg State Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra’s concert performance of Das Rheingold is celebrated Australian and Hamburg Philharmonic Musical Director Simone Young. The first woman to conduct a complete Ring Cycle, in 1999, Simone has since led complete performances of the cycle in Berlin and most recently Hamburg.
Returning to Brisbane for the Hamburg season, Simone will lead the Hamburg State Opera, of which she is General Manager, alongside guest singers, some of whom have performed at Bayreuth, the theatre where the first complete Ring Cycle was seen in 1876.

Conducted by one of Australia’s most distinguished artistic exports Simone Young, the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra with soloists from Hamburg State Opera and a 100 voice choir will perform Mahler’s majestic Symphony No. 2 Resurrection for one night only.
In 1891, composer and conductor Gustav Mahler took up the baton as First Conductor of the Hamburg Opera. It was during his six years in Hamburg that Mahler developed as a composer and conductor, creating his monumental Second Symphony (Resurrection) and expansive Third Symphony.
The ethereal closing chorus of the Resurrection (‘Rise up, yes you will rise up’), one of the most transcendent moments in all music, came to Mahler in a flash of inspiration following the memorial service to the great conductor Hans von Bülow in Hamburg’s vast baroque church of St Michael.
This not-to-be missed, one-off performance will bring together historic and contemporary Hamburg in a majestic evening that is bound to have audiences rising up in spirit and in adulation.
This unique opportunity to experience the glory of Hamburg and Mahler will form the centrepiece of the exclusive Hamburg Gala Evening.

Das Rheingold Symposium

Das Rheingold Symposium organised by the Wagner Society in Queensland, in association with The Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. Esther recently came to international attention when she became the youngest prize winner of the 10th International Sibelius Violin Competition in 2010, taking third prize aged 16. With its dark brooding opening, song-like slow movement and restlessly dancing finale, it's widely regarded as the most taxing in the repertoire. Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet ballet is one of the greatest scores of the twentieth century, whose transcendent "symphonic" qualities make it widely performed in the concert hall where it never fails to move audiences with its power and eloquence.

His brother and fellow gang member Dan, who Ned believes died at the siege of Glenrowan, visits disguised as a priest. He's seeking Ned's blessing and forgiveness before heading north to start a new life in Queensland. But after everything they've been through together over the years, and how all of this has affected them, a blessing is not an easy ask. Brothers of the same blood and name, but with very different perspectives of their past. Cowards, murderers or heroes? Life or death? Now, at the end, they confront each other, striving to understand their past. Dramatically entwining fact, theory and myth, Kelly is the latest achievement of Brisbane-based playwright Matthew Ryan (boy girl wall, Sacré Bleu). It is masterfully balanced with light and shade, and the quick-fire banter between the characters resonates with a crass but irresistible brand of Australian humour. Set in the sultry background of Seville, Spain, this avant-garde and inspiring production follows the life of the beautiful and free-spirited Carmen, a gypsy rose who melts men's hearts with her unbridled passion and fiery temper.
Innovative and provocative, the soul- stirring music of Carmen, which includes the sultry Habañera and the famous March of the Toreadors, is a perfect foil to the alternating comic and romantic drama in this spectacular production by renowned director Francesca Zambello, who presents a fresh and evocative perspective of this iconic tale of passion.
Carmen's hedonistic and fatalistic free love are as shocking today as they were when the French masterpiece first made its debut in Paris over a century ago. A work of everlasting genius, Carmen is a vibrant feast for all the senses, and guaranteed to get your blood hot and your mind spinning.

After the dance, luxuriate in the voluptuous sounds of QSO's strings in one of the last and greatest outpourings of Romantic Viennese music, Arnold Schonberg's Transfigured Night. Ship to Shore features the extraordinary talents of the Grigoryan Brothers in a spirited performance for the end of the year.
The Grigoryan brothers are stellar performers. Seamlessly crossing the boundaries of classical and popular guitar styles, they are the perfect collaborators for this rollicking, swashbuckling program of shanties and songs about the sea.
From the coast of Newfoundland to the shores of Ireland and from the ports of Portugal to the sundrenched beaches of Brazil, the men that laboured on the tall ships were expected to sing. Back home, the women left behind found their own expression for loss and longing.
This concert contains some of the most memorable sea shanties written as well as adaptations of classic sea songs and a variety of music from around the seafaring world.Program

Miraculously, Lindberg creates shimmering sonorities with the Mozart-sized orchestra and a rhapsodic solo role for the violinist. Kats-Chernin's two pieces are beautiful explorations of her quirky talent.

In fact, rarely have two musicians clicked so well on stage. They’re so in sync, they’ve even been referred to as musical soul mates. Friends and collaborators for over twenty years, both are among the best on their instrument in the world. Marwood’s cerebral and expressive style is contrasted perfectly with the natural brilliance of Madžar. It’s a special connection: as if two old friends are getting together to have a laugh, share their secrets and generally chew the fat. With adventurous repertoire from Beethoven, Debussy and Schubert, they just seem to get each other. We’re pretty sure you’ll get them too.

QSO - Circus! Enjoy Gould's Concerto for Tap Dancer and Orchestra as well as Stravinsky's Circus Polka written with the subtitle "composed for a baby elephant" as a parody. Yet not everything is bright and gaudy: Nino Rota's score for Fellini's classic La Strada The Road, evokes a nostalgic tenderness towards these nomadic performers.

He was also the first guitarist to win the Prince of Wales' Prince's Prize. With an inspiring program, including works by Bach, Barrios, Villa Lobos, Albeniz, Theodorakis and Domeniconi, this young talent brings a new light and emotion to his humble instrument. "...the guitar has found its ideal champion..." - The Independent "Innate poise and elegance that makes you sit up and listen..." - The Times "...a fierce drive and precision." - Gramophone Magazine "... transcendentally beautiful." - The Daily Telegraph (UK)

The Class of '69

From the producers of the smash hit concert tour The Class of '59 and Buddy: The Concert, comes THE CLASS OF '69! During the early years of Australian Rock & Roll, the scene was almost entirely male-dominated. Here is a rare chance to hear this marvelously expansive work in its entirety and marvel at the long reverie during the slow movement where the piano participates in a dialogue with cello and violin. It is performed by Eldar Nebolsin, who has garnered accolades for his recordings of Romantic music. Another revelation is the Gorchakov arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Many leading conductors believe this orchestration conveys more of the colour, vitality and earthiness of old Russia. This sensational version is like looking at the pictures with decades of varnish removed..
