As the Library plays host to the Brisbane Writers Festival, September's Tea and Music will examine the writings of some famous musical friends - virtuoso pianist Clara Schumann and composer Johannes Brahms. As a young composer, Brahms was championed by Clara's husband Robert, but it was Clara who became his greatest friend. Their affectionate letters trace the development of Brahms' career, and reveal Clara's strength as she continued her own career and raised seven children. Clara and Johannes discussed their joys and longings, frustrations and surprises, and most of all, their musical thoughts and experiences.
Brisbane operatic soprano D'Arne Sleeman and pianist Mark Leung will perform a delightful selection of works by both Brahms and Schumann, interspersed with excerpts from their many letters. September Tea and Music will be a pleasure too good to miss.
Tea and Music is a series of morning teas and performances that present and perform music from, and inspired by, the State Library's vast music collections.
