The sensational Ukrainian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk will open Medici Concerts’ twentieth anniversary series in spectacular style, once again enthralling the audience with his ‘blow-your-socks-off virtuosity’. He has won first prize in many of the world’s top international piano competitions, including the prestigious Horowitz, Rubinstein and Hammamatsu competitions.
Gavrylyuk is in constant demand with the world’s top orchestras. A recent performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic had critics reaching for superlatives: ‘Gavrylyuk was on fire…scales burning with visceral power…eating up those octaves…brought back memories of Horowitz’.
Prokofiev’s fiendishly difficult Piano Concerto No 2 remains an unassailable fortress for most pianists. Gavrylyuk’s recent performance at the Concertgebouw with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Mikhail Pletnev was a success of epic proportions:
‘real fireworks…the strength of sound and power only inferior to the entire Concertgebouw Orchestra playing at full power’.
Gavrylyuk creates a wonderful world of sound with clear lines and colours like a Mondrian painting.
