Mary & Me
Mary Poppins and her creator P.L. Travers

Few literary characters inhabit a life of their own the way Mary Poppins has.

When the sometimes stern and often magical nanny first appeared in print in 1934, she already seemed oddly familiar. Queensland-born author P.L. Travers insisted that she didn't invent the character, but merely wrote her down. Wherever she came from, Mary Poppins has delighted children and adults alike for decades.

She has appeared in a series of books written by Travers, a much-loved Disney film featuring Julie Andrews and now in a spectacular stage musical.

Mary & Me looks at this remarkable journey from page to stage and features original papers from the P.L. Travers collections from the Mitchell Library at the State Library of New South Wales, archival video and costumes from the current musical version of Mary Poppins.
