35MM, COLOUR, DOLBY DIGITAL, 101 MINUTES, USA, ENGLISH, DIRECTORS: SHARI SPRINGER BERMAN, ROBERT PULCINI / BASED ON THE 1976 COMIC BY HARVEY PEKAR
Ordinary life is pretty complex stuff. Working-class everyman Harvey Pekar has continued to chronicle the worn tapestry of his life from workday miseries as a file clerk, his failed love affairs and numbing loneliness. Transposed to screen, American Splendor explores the comic writer through the prism of different depictions: the drawn, the acted and the real. Amidst the curmudgeonly tirades, optimism arrives in the form of Pekar’s third wife, whose presence brings a loving poignancy to this ongoing story.
Screens with Robert Castillo’s S.P.I.C.: The Storyboard of My Life 2004 (27mins) on 28 Jan 4.00pm.
