“Amadeus is a play about music, madness, murder… and MOZART.
When court composer Antonio Salieri is confronted with the formidable talents of an “obscene” young Mozart, he descends into a jealousy-fuelled madness, taking matters into his own manipulative hands. Set amidst the opulence and splendour of 18th Century Vienna, this brilliantly written stage play by English dramatist Peter Shaffer features Mozart’s music to glorious effect.
Directed by and starring Tama Matheson (Opera Australia) as Mozart, this production by 4MBS Classic Arts is now in its fifth season, having received standing ovations in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart. It features a superb new cast of distinguished Australian actors, including Steven Grives (Salieri), Robert Coleby (Emperor Joseph), Anna Mowry (Constanze), Ian McFadyen (Count Orsini-Rosenburg), Bob Newman (Baron van Swieten), Daniel Murphy (Von Strack), Penny Farrow (Venticelli 1) and Imogen Hopper (Venticelli 2).
Amadeus is the highlight of “Mostly Mozart Week”, a mini-festival within the bigger 4MBS Festival of Classics – Australia’s largest classical music festival.”
